ACTIVE LEARNING
How to accelerate students learning? Will our students understand what we’re  trying to do??? How can we empower our students to be leaders later on; either in their personal lives or in their careers??? How can give them confidence to apply what they know? How do you deal with risks and uncertainties in your profession at the auditorium? One of the things that I would like my students to actually do to make them better learners to make them have the skills and competencies that will allow them to be successful citizens of the 21st century. How do students see other students working? How do we use that as models for both work ethic and engagement in learning?
The value of knowledge is determined by its use and by the opportunities that people have to have access to it. And that the learner makes the primary choices about what has value, what’s interesting, and what needs to be learned. The primary unit of learning is the person- the single person. That learning occurs as an individual activity. And it only happens when individuals are engaged in some kind of direct learning. collective means that learning is primarily a social activity. That is, people relate to each other around things that they have a common interest in. And it is that relationship, or that social interaction, that aids and abets learning.
Good, powerful, meaningful learning occurs
when the interests of the learner is matched with the capacity of a tutor. Learning is almost the engine that allows us to continue to be dynamic.
The founder of Core Knowledge is E.D. Hirsch, Jr., who is also Professor Emeritus of Education and Humanities at the University of Virginia affirms that: An effective curriculum must be coupled with effective teaching. We believe teaching excellence requires a mastery of subject matter, as well as the ability to engage students, build language competency, use assessment to drive instruction, scaffold instruction to meet individual needs, and provide targeted feedback to students to further shape their learning.
Individuals are natural learners. Human beings advance, develop, and progress based on this built-in instinct to learn and know things that have value to them. Individuals are capable of making judgments about what knowledge is helpful to them and what’s useful to them. How long to sustain your engagement with this.
Those choices are based on students’ intrinsic motivation as a learner, students’ understanding of why they’re here, and their interpretation of the value that the content brings to them. Individuals choose what to learn based on their values, interests, and aptitudes. Learning is an inherent biological imperative; people never stop learning. Learners must make sense of competing and diverse sources of knowledge, skill and expertise.
Students learn better when they’re engaged with other people who are learning. I think a lot of students before they come in are acculturated to believe that learning is a selfish and individual endeavor and not that it’s a social endeavor.
And haven’t really experienced what is it
like to be a member of a learning community
where you’re not there to serve your own needs
but the needs of the entire community.
When is learning successful? Students are successful learners when their learning is driven
by their own questions, when they learn to formulate their own questions. So the ultimate judge for determining what is beautiful, what is true, what is good, is inside THEMSELVES. The question is not do I want to join a particular career track and be in a particular sector. The question is how do I want to enter the learning sector. What will be the opportunities for doing that? And what are the knowledge and skill sets
that are required to lead in different parts of the learning sector?
Builds and sustains stable relationships with learners and their families based on high expectations by fostering the acceptance of group goals and creating high performance expectations. Offering intellectual stimulation, providing individualized support and providing appropriate models of best practice and beliefs.
The ability to handle risk and uncertainty. Will people actually come to the learning opportunities you offer them? Will they understand what you’re trying to do? We have to rticulate an appealing vision of learning that is shaped by the needs, preferences, and dispositions of individual learners.
Being a professor is taking on a role in which you can empower others to become leaders later on, whether it’s in their own personal lives or in some other aspect of life. Professors should be able to feel like I’m teaching others a valuable skill but also giving them confidence to feel like they can take what they know and apply it in a different situation. And your willingness to accept risk and uncertainty in the future of your work. It requires an understanding of how to motivate people
and how to find a clientele and a set of people
who are interested in what you have to offer. Roles are determined by the needs of the delivered learning experience. We have to figure out how to engage students’ interest and to bring them into the content in such a way that we can sustain their interest over time. Give  learners autonomy  to  determine  their  level  of commitment  to  and  engagement  with  learning.
