Differences between present continuous and present simple

present continuous
– For things in general or things that happen repeatedly:
 *Water boils at 100 degree.
    People spend their weekend in parks.
   It rains in Iraq only in winter.
– For permanent situations ( things) that continue for a long time.
  *My uncle lives in Baghdad, he has spent his life there.
  *Stative verbs: Some verbs mostly are not used with –ing form
*Feelings and emotions: know, hate, love
 *believing and thinking: realize, mean,..
*having and possession: contain, own, possess,..
* wants and preference: desire, need, like,…
*sense perception: seem. Taste, sound,..
– Things happen at or around the time of speaking ( the action is not complete): 
 *Be careful. The water is boiling
   It is raining now. let’s go inside.
– For temporary situations ( things that continue for a short time):
 *Ann is living in a hostel until she finds flat.
– For pejorative ( unwanted) habits:
  *My friend is always losing her keys.
*Dynamic verbs: The majority of verbs can be used with –ing form:
* speaking, drinking, discussing,..
 
* am, is, are + being + adjective:   How somebody is behaving now.
   Adjective = doing something we can control ( behaving now)
    -Tom is being careful, careless,…
   -Surprisingly, our managers are being selfish today.
But Not: -Lura is being sick tonight.
       Are you being happy today?
 
( It is not usually possible in other situations)
