PhD Dissertation at the College of Education for the Humanities Explores Hassan Al-Amin’s Approach to Historical Documentation

The Department of History at the College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala, held a debate for a PhD dissertation, by the PhD candidate Ghassan Ghazi Youssef under the supervision of Professor Dr Ali Taher Turki, under the title Hassan Al-Amin and His Approach to Historical Documentation: A Study in“Mustadrakat A’yan Al-Shia (1908-2002) Book.

The dissertation is structured in four chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of the early life of Sayyid Hassan bin Mohsen Al-Amin Al-Amili, emphasising the impact of his family background and the political climate on his intellectual development. The study further depicts his educational journey and work experience including his teaching in Iraq and Nabatiyah, as well as his literary works. The second chapter sheds light on his intellectual output, and the third offers an in-depth analysis of his methodology and stylistic approach to historical documentation. The final chapter examines his perspectives on historical, intellectual, political, and literary analyses.

Furthermore, the dissertation reached several key conclusions, most notably: biographical works serve as a crucial source for studying various historical periods, and the study of history extends beyond mere events, encompassing a broader scope. Additionally, the dissertation emphasised the importance of renewal in crafting titles that reflect this diversity, and it highlighted Al-Amin’s objectivity in selecting the prominent figures he documented in Mustadrakat.
