The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Kerbala, recently held a public discussion for the master’s thesis titled, The Analytical Approach of Ibn Babshadh in His Sharh Jumal al-Zajjaji (d. 469 AH). The thesis, written by Muhammad Sadiq Badr Shanif al-Saeedi and supervised by Professor Dr. Salam Mujid Khalkhal, delves into the academic significance of Ibn Babshadh’s commentary on linguistic and grammatical debates.
The study highlights the scientific value of Sharh Jumal al-Zajjaji, illustrating Ibn Babshadh’s approach to addressing grammatical and morphological issues. It further investigates his foundational principles in grammar and his stance on contentious grammatical disputes. The thesis is structured into three chapters:chapter one examines Ibn Babshadh’s methodology in presenting his material and the sources he utilized, chapter two focuses on the evidence and examples cited in the book, and chapter threeexplores his grammatical principles and his approach to resolving grammatical disagreements.
Moreover, this thesis adds valuable insights into the methodological contributions of Ibn Babshadh, enriching the field of Arabic linguistics and grammar. It reached several conclusions among which is Ibn Babshadh’s varied techniques for presenting material, such as the use of dialogue, questioning, and cross-referencing to avoid repetition. Additionally, the study reveals that he did not wholly accept al-Zajjaji’s views but occasionally critiqued them. His citations are diverse, drawing from the Quran and classical Arabic language.
