A dissertation in the Department of History Examining Titles and Nicknames of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT)

A dissertation in the Department of History at the College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala, has searched “Titles, Nicknames, and Descriptions of Reverence and Condemnation among the Ahl al-Bayt(PBUT),” was defended by the student Farah HazemHamid, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. MaythamMurtada Mustafa.

The importance of the dissertation lies in its close connection to the religious, social, and intellectual life of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT). It explores the titles and nicknames associated with them, including those that carry attributes of reverence or condemnation. The research focuses particularly on their noble titles and nicknames, which have both apparent and deep-rooted meanings, as well as the profound impact these titles had on their sacred lives and their lasting influence on the present and future.

The dissertation consists of six chapters. The first chapter examines the concepts and terminology found in Islamic heritage. The second chapter discusses the approach of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) in refining names. The third chapter sheds light on the titles and nicknames of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The fourth chapter focuses on the titles and nicknames of Amir al-Mu’minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (PBUH), while the fifth chapter is dedicated to the titles and nicknames of Lady Fatimah Al-Zahraa and her two sons (PBUT). Finally, the sixth chapter addresses the titles and nicknames of the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) during the Umayyad and Abbasid ages.

The study reached several important conclusions, the most significant being that the majority of titles and nicknames associated with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his noble family (PBUT) carry reverential descriptions, far removed from any form of condemnation, except for those attempts by some distorters and hypocrites who tried to falsely attach negative descriptions to them, such as the title “the illiterate” (Al-Ummi) and the nickname “Abu Turab.” The reason that makes their titles good is that they were being chosen and selected by God Almighty, as God has purified them from all impurity, sin, and vice. Furthermore, many of their prominent titles and nicknames were divinely appointed.
