The College of Education for the Humanities at the University of Kerbala organized a training workshop titled “Advertising Discourse: Terminology, Concept, and Components—A Critical Reading.” Professor Dr.Karima Noumas Al-Madani delivered the workshop, which was attended by college students.
The term “discourse” is broad and has evolved significantly across various fields of knowledge. Its linguistic roots trace back to notions of communication and dialogue, encompassing matters of importance and relevance. Notably, the term appears in the Holy Quran in the verse: “And We gave him wisdom and decisive speech” (Surah Sad: 20). Some interpreters have explained “decisive speech” as judgment based on clear evidence and concise language that is easily understood by the addressee.
The workshop aimed to elucidate the concept of advertising discourse, transitioning its interpretation from general knowledge fields to a more focused linguistic domain. Moreover, the workshop covered several critical topics, including:
• An introduction to the terminology and concept of discourse.
• An analysis of the components of advertising discourse.
• The appearance of the term “discourse” in the Quran and its interpretations.
• The contributions of classical rhetoricians in explaining the multifaceted aspects of discourse.
This insightful workshop provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of advertising discourse, highlighting its linguistic significance and practical applications.
