A Master’s thesis in the Department of English, College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala, titled:
“The Representation of Artificial Intelligence in Social Media: A Critical Discourse Analysis” was conducted by Tabarak Riyadh Abdulhamid, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ghanem Jowid Eidan.
This thesis undertakes a critical discourse analysis to explore the representation of artificial intelligence on social media platforms, focusing on the discourse related to three prominent figures: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates, as expressed through their social media accounts.
The primary objective of the research was to investigate the construction of “Self” and “Other” in the social media platforms:X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Threads, with the aim of uncovering the underlying ideologies of the three figures.
The study revealed several significant findings, the most notable being that Elon Musk employs more negative terminology in his representation of artificial intelligence compared to Mark Zuckerberg, aiming to warn the public about its potential dangers. In contrast, both Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerbergemphasize the positive aspects of artificial intelligence to encourage its adoption by the public.
The thesis was defended before the following examination committee:
