Under the direction of the President of the University of Kerbala, Prof. Dr. Sabah Wajid, and the sponsorship of the Dean of the College of Education for the Humanities, Prof. Dr. Hadi Al-Sa’eedi, the Linguistic Committee for Activities and Competitions organized a scientific symposium titled “Language and Thought: The Debate on Priority and Influence”. The symposium was supervised by Dr. Yasmeen Khudair Khalaf, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, with presentations delivered by Prof. Dr. Rafal Hassan Al-Taie and Dr. Abbas Obaid Al-Ameri from the Department of Arabic.
The event was attended by Dr. Jenan Al-Jubouri, Head of the Department of Arabic, faculty members of the department, and staff of the college, along with members of the organizing committee.
The symposium explored the foundations of a significant contemporary linguistic and intellectual debate: whether language precedes thought or thought precedes language. It examined the contributions of linguists, psychologists, and philosophers who have studied this subject, focusing on the interplay between what the mind generates and how it is expressed through language.
Key topics included:
- An introductory overview of the relationship between language and thought.
- A review of prominent philosophical and anthropological theories on the subject.
