Master’s Thesis at the College of Education for the Humanities Discusses Phonetic Significance in the Poetry of Mahdi Al-Araji

A Master’s thesis titled Phonetic Significance in the Poetry of Sayyid Mahdi Al-Araji (1359 AH) was defended at the Department of Arabic, College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala. The thesis was presented by student Jaafar Kazem Bajai under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Alia Nasrat Hassan.

This study underscores the role of phonetic significance in constructing poetic texts by Mahdi Al-Araji and examines the aesthetic and artistic dimensions added by phonetic elements to his poetry. It contributes to the fields of literary and linguistic studies by exploring how sound conveys meaning beyond lexical semantics.

Phonetic significance is a critical linguistic discipline that investigates the interplay between sounds and meanings, highlighting how phonological structures influence the transmission of emotions and ideas. Language, through sound, expresses sentiments and emotions that transcend the mere denotation of words.

The study consists of three chapters. The first chapter investigates phonetic elements, including vowels and consonants, alongside scholarly perspectives on them. The second chapter is dedicated to the study of stressed syllables and intonation, while the third chapter explores phonetic phenomena closely related to phonological analysis.

The examination committee comprised:

  • Prof. Dr. Jinan Mansour Kazem – Chair
  • Prof. Dr. Falah Rasool Hussein – Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Mirvat Youssef Kazem – Member
  • Prof. Dr. Alia Nasrat Hassan – Member and Supervisor
