Quranic Recitation as a Linguistic and Cognitive Tool for Arabic language Aquisition
By: Sarah Ali Al.Nasrawy
Quranic recitation serves not only as an act of worship but also as a powerful linguistic tool, reinforcing Standard Arabic for native speakers while aiding non-Arabic speakers in acquiring the language. Its repetitive and rhythmic nature enhances cognitive processing and memory, as well as its structured phonetics, rich vocabulary, and precise grammar make language learning more effective. From a psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic perspective, this structured auditory input strengthens phonemic awareness, verbal processing, and overall language proficiency.
From a cognitive perspective ,research indicates that exposure to structured and rhythmic auditory input enhances memory and cognitive processing (Baddeley, 2003). Studies in neurolinguistics, show that repeated auditory exposure strengthens neural connections related to speech perception and processing, improving both short-term and long-term memory (Ziegler & Goswami, 2005). In terms of language acquisition, frequent exposure to Quranic recitation plays a vital role in phonological awareness, which is a key step in mastering any language (Kuhl, 2004). Moreover, Quranic memorization involves active recall, strengthening verbal memory and supporting the acquisition of additional languages. From a Psychological standpoint, Quranic recitation also has a profound emotional and mental impact. Studies in psycholinguistics suggest that rhythmic speech patterns, such as those found in Quranic recitation, activate areas of the brain associated with relaxation and stress reduction, thereby improving mental focus, emotional stability, and overall cognitive discipline (Davidson & McEwen, 2012).
Thus, Quranic recitation serves as a multifaceted linguistic tool, enhancing cognitive processing, language acquisition, and psychological well-being simultaneously. For both Arabic speakers and non-Arabic speakers, frequent Quranic recitation helps develop their linguistic abilities, improve cognitive skills, and deepen their connection to the Arabic language.
