When Boccaccio first tried writing prose, he used the term novella storia (short story in prose), which is said to have been derived from the Latin word novellus, the Italian word novella (which signified a small new thing), and the French word novella. In the fourteenth century, Boccaccio popularized the novella collection craze with his Decameron, a compilation of ten short works. However, until the seventeenth century, the meaning of the word novel referred to the type of short stories written and collected by Boccaccio; however, as the development of novels progressed in the eighteenth century, the meaning of the word novel shifted
from a short prose tale to a prose narrative of considerable length.
