Seminar on Linguistic Shift and Stylistic Vulgarization

A student in the Department of English delivers a scientific seminar on Linguistic Shift and the Phenomenon of Stylistic Vulgarization.

In the context of cultural domination and the deterioration of linguistic style, the Department of English at the College of Education for the Humanitiesheld an awareness-raising seminar titled ” The Culture of the Conqueror and the Conquered: Language Shift and the Phenomenon of Stylistic Degradation,”presented by the department’s student Khadija Zaid, under the supervision of Asst. Lect. Karrar Mohammed Al-Husseini.

The seminar, which targeted faculty members and students of the department, aimed to raise awareness about the concept of “the concept of the victor and the vanquished” as formulated by Ibn Khaldun. It analyzed manifestations of civilizational and cultural subordination through linguistic shift and examined its impact on cultural identity within contemporary Iraqi society.

The seminar included discussions on the concept of language transformation and the degradation of stylistic expression under cultural domination, linking these phenomena to historical and contemporary examples. It also explored key themes such as Ibn Khaldun’s thoughts on the conqueror and the conquered, the dimensions and meanings of linguistic shift, language as a tool of civilizational hegemony, and the implications of this transformation on Iraqi cultural identity.

The College of Education for the Humanities at the University of Kerbala continues to strive to activate the academic and research roles of its students, harness their knowledge cultures to positively influence society, and engage with contemporary topics and challenges by proposing effective solutions.
