Dissertation in the Department of Arabic Language Explores the Lexicon of the Holy Qur’an in Modern Scholarly Studies: Foundations and Analysis

PhD dissertation titled “The Lexicon of the Holy Qur’an in Modern Scholarly Studies: Foundations and Analysis” was debated at the Department of Arabic Language, College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala. Maryam Abbas Amouri conducted the study under the supervision of Prof. Mohammed Hussein Ali Zain (PhD).

The study sheds light on Qur’anic proper nouns from both foundational and lexicographic perspectives. It offered comparative insights with related terms in other Semitic languages and examined their morphological structures, including fixed forms and derivations. The dissertation also analysed their semantic interpretations in the light of modern exegesis, attempting to assess the extent to which contemporary scholars align with or diverge from classical interpretations.

Furthermore, the study is divided into three chapters; Chapter One explores personal proper nouns, Chapter Two deals with place names, and Chapter Three focuses on various other types of proper nouns.

Key findings reveal that most Qur’anic proper nouns conform to Arabic morphological patterns, aligning with common Arabic linguistic structures. However, a few terms sparked scholarly debate; some were attributed to other languages, while others were considered unique Qur’anic words previously unknown to Arabs or any other language.
