Staff Member from the College Granted a PhD in Development Geography from the University of Baghdad

Lecturer Mustafa Maki Al-Fatlawi, from the Department of Applied Geography, College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala, has earned a PhD in Development Geography from the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the College of Arts, University of Baghdad. His dissertation was titled: “Development of Rural Settlements in Al-Hussainiya, Al-Hindiya, and Al-Jadwal Al-Gharbi Districts in Karbala Governorate: A Study in Development Geography.”

The dissertation aimed to achieve economic, social, and service development for rural settlements in Karbala by analysinggeographic factors contributing to rural development, identifying key obstacles, proposing solutions, and assessing the efficiency of community and infrastructure services, in addition to achieving progressive aims for elevating the rural reality.

Key findings revealed that the study area possesses natural advantages such as fertile soil, flat topography, and abundant water resources, including the Bani Hassan, Al-Hussainiya, and Al-Kifl canals. Despite its tourism potential, the area has limited tourist activity. The study identified 232 rural settlementsdistributed across three patterns: clustered, linear, and dispersed, with significant arable lands (212,843 dunams) but only 110,407 dunams actually cultivated.

The dissertation was successfully defended and approved by the examination committee. The college administration congratulates him on this achievement and wishes him continued success and academic excellence.
