Dissertation in the Department of Arabic Language Discusses the Phenomenon of Grammatical Justification

A PhD dissertation titled “Linguistic Justification in the Commentary on Al-Kāfiyah by Ibn al-Ḥajib, by Yaʿqūb ibn Aḥmad / Ḥaji ʿAwaḍ (d. 845 AH)” was debated in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala. The dissertation was submitted by researcher Haider Hammoud Abdul-Amir and supervised by Prof. Salam Muwajid Khalkhal (PhD).

The dissertation aims to study the significance of the phenomenon of grammatical justification and its considerable impact on ancient and modern grammatical studies, particularly in explaining rules and analogies.

The study examines the reliance of most linguists and grammarians on justification in forming many of their grammatical rulings.

Furthermore, the study consists of three chapters: the first chapter is titled Grammatical Justification in the Inflected and Uninflected Nouns, the second chapter is titled Grammatical Justification in the Inflected and Uninflected Verbs, and the third chapter is titled Grammatical Justification in Particles.

The study reached several conclusions, the most important of which was that grammatical justification emerged alongside the development of grammatical studies. It originated as a spontaneous phenomenon among early scholars and evolved into a well-established tradition. The researcher also highlighted the commentator Ibn Ḥaji ʿAwaḍ’s meticulous attention to grammatical justification, as his commentary was rich in justifications. Additionally, it became evident that the commentator was influenced by Ibn al-Ḥajib, closely following many of his views and justifications.
