Scientific Seminar in the Department of English: “From Canvas to Concept”

As part of its efforts to explore the relationship between image and meaning, the Department of English at the College of Education for the Humanities, University of Kerbala, held a scientific seminar titled “From Canvas to Concept: The Interplay of Image, Text, and Meaning.” The seminar was delivered by first-year student Zainab Basim Mohammed Jawad, under the supervision of Lect. Dr. Mustafa Abbas Sahen Al-Rusheid.

The seminar aimed to familiarize attendees with intellectual and theoretical methods of reading and analyzing artwork, while shedding light on the philosophical-critical diagnosis of how the recipient might find themselves confined within the “prison of reality,” the “prison of thought,” or the “prison of the word.”

The session incorporated concepts from prominent thinkers and philosophers such as Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, and Roland Barthes, with a focused discussion on The Death of Socrates by Jacques-Louis David as a rich visual example through which various critical and philosophical theories could be applied.

The event witnessed the attendance of several faculty members, students of the department, and individuals interested in literary and artistic studies, and was marked by deep intellectual engagement and discussions.
